'Avatar' tops $1 billion at worldwide box office

Twentieth Century Fox and James Cameron's "Avatar" rang in the New Year with an estimated worldwide cume of $1 billion through Sunday, becoming the fourth highest grosser of all time.

Domestic cume was $352.1 million, including a weekend take of $68.3 million, the best gross ever for a film in its third weekend.

Overseas, the pic's cume through Sunday was $670.2 million.

Domestically, Warner Bros. "Sherlock Holmes" stayed at No. 2 over New Year's weekend, grossing an estimated $38.4 million from 3,626 theaters for a cume of $140.7 million in its first 10 days.

Fox's "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" held at No. 3, grossing an estimated $36.6 million from 3,747 runs for a domestic cume of $157.3 million in its first 12 days.

Universal's Nancy Meyers romantic comedy "It's Complicated" grossed an estimated $18.7 million from 2,897 runs for a cume of $59.1 million in its first 10 days.

Paramount's "Up in the Air," directed by Jason Reitman and starring George Clooney, grossed an estimated $11.4 million from 1,895 runs for the weekend for a cume of $45 million.
